What is the challenge?
There is an urgent need for new ways to connect, learn, and lead if we are to achieve the goal of immunizing 90% of the world’s children.
- Extending vaccine coverage requires effective vaccination programmes to recover from the impact of the pandemic.
- The introduction of COVID-19 vaccines represents an unprecedented learning and leadership challenge.
What is the opportunity?
The Teach to Reach Conference will convene thousands of national and sub-national participants from the Scholar network of more than 25,000 immunization staff:
- to share, and build on, collective leadership for learning;
- to rethink how and why we invest in people to achieve the immunization goals; and
- to problem-solve how we will enhance country preparedness for COVID vaccine readiness and introduction
How is this conference different?
A community-driven, co-designed agenda
Our goal is to bring the voices of practitioners involved in learning – at all levels of health systems – alongside those of global experts shaping learning policy, science, and practice for immunization.
Most conferences are organized by a small committee of experts.
- This event is being curated by hundreds of country-based immunization professionals who completed the Teach to Reach Scholar programme in 2020.
- Everyone who registers for the Conference will be invited to propose speakers, topics, and other ways to contribute.
- Country teams from the COVID-19 Peer Hub will be sharing what they have learned during the pandemic and how they are preparing for COVID-19 vaccine introduction.
Purely digital to do more, better, faster
The Geneva Learning Foundation’s venue for the Conference will augment the conference experience:
- A Stage for plenary presentations. The Stage will be open 24 hours with presentations running continuously for all time zones.
- Sessions for workshops and panel discussions. The number of workshops and panel discussions are unlimited.
- Networking: Participants will be randomly matched during “Instant Remote Coffee” sessions. The number of matches and conversations are unlimited.
- Booths: Partners and Sponsors will be able to host a booth to showcase their products, tools, and services.
What is the opportunity for global partners?
For global partners who believe that we need to pay more attention to people who deliver vaccines, this Conference will provide a unique opportunity for co-design: to listen, connect, and learn directly with immunization staff from all levels of the system, from the health facility to the central planning team in the capital.

Why are people who deliver vaccines important?
Teach to Reach is not only about training people who deliver vaccines. It is also about the global community:
- learning from what people who deliver vaccines know;
- learning how they are solving problems every day to reach those who need vaccines;
- learning how they are supporting each other to achieve their countries’ immunization goals; and
- applying that learning to strengthen the relevance and quality of global policy, practice, and guidance.
Do we need to rethink investment in immunization training?
- Concern about the effectiveness of current immunization training and learning methods has remained startlingly constant since Orin Levine’s and Violaine Mitchell’s initial diagnosis during the first Teach to Reach Conference in 2015.
- Yet, every immunization programme requires that capacities be strengthened, performance improved, and leadership developed.
- This Conference aims to contribute to the change that is needed to make learning and leadership a "best buy" for both donors and countries and a key driver for innovation that will propel immunization staff on their way to achieving the global goals.

How is the pandemic changing immunization training?
Immunization training was slowly moving online when the pandemic hit.
- Restrictions of movement suddenly made conventional forms of face-to-face training difficult or impossible.
- Programme managers have had to cancel or pivot to digital means in “emergency mode”, using ad hoc approaches that, in some cases, ignored or contradicted decades of evidence from digital education research.
This conference will take stock of these consequences – and how to make use of the lessons learned going forward.

COVID-19 vaccine introduction
Getting new vaccines to new target groups at speed requires rapid learning and constant adaptation
COVID-19 vaccine introduction may be the most complex learning challenge the immunization community has faced.
Every day of rollout, health workers will face new challenges and come up with new solutions.
- How can we support frontline health workers to share what they will learn, particularly in the early stages of roll-out?
- How can we scale up training health workers rapidly and effectively?
- How can we bring country level experiences to the attention of global experts and policy makers?
How this Conference can contribute
- Accelerated development, delivery and global deployment of COVID-19 vaccines requires new systems.
- Conventional training and e-learning are unlikely to produce the capabilities or leadership needed to achieve the urgent goals of COVID-19 vaccine introduction and the long-term goals of IA 2030.
- A major, purposeful shift is needed to transform how we support sub-national immunization staff and how we learn from their daily problem-solving at all levels.
To do this requires approaches capable of engaging significant and growing numbers of sub-national staff in two-way dialogues with peers, and national and global structures.
Who should participate in the Conference?
You are welcome to register whether or not your formal role involves learning, training, or professional development.
You do not need to be a learning or training specialist to participate.
If you work in immunization, join the Conference to:
- improve the quality of training you participate in, organize and/or deliver.

About Teach to Reach
From hotel-based conferences to digital transformation
What is Teach to Reach?
In 2015, 2016, and 2018, Teach to Reach face-to-face conferences convened 80 country immunization leaders, global partners, and learning scientists to explore the “art of the possible” and how to approach training differently.
What is the Teach to Reach Accelerator?
- The Teach to Reach ACCELERATOR is a Scholar programme launched in 2020, open to all immunization professionals involved with training or workforce development.
- The aim is to foster the emergence of new forms of leadership and action to transform learning in ways that help countries progress faster toward the global goals.
Who is participating in the Teach to Reach Accelerator?
- In March 2020, 3,234 immunization professionals from 95 countries joined Teach to Reach.
- More than half of Teach to Reach participants work for their country’s Ministry of Health. Three-quarters work at the sub-national level.
What did Teach to Reach participants do in 2020?
- By June 2020, 989 Scholars had developed peer-reviewed projects to lead change in their contexts.
- 549 Teach to Reach Alumni then collaborated in an intensive three-day Immunization Training Challenge Hackathon (ITCH) to problem-solve their immunization training challenges in October 2020.
How Teach to Reach pivoted in response to the pandemic
- The Teach to Reach Accelerator was developed as a fully-digital remote programme.
- This means that the pandemic did not hinder our efforts.
- Rather, it demonstrated the resilience of digital learning systems in a crisis and its relevance to the future of immunization training.
From Teach to Reach to the COVID-19 Peer Hub
- Teach to Reach participants helped pivot our efforts to create the COVID-19 Peer Hub, applying what they had explored during the first course in the programme.
- This Peer Hub, drawing on the Teach to Reach Accelerator methodology, fostered the generation and sharing of ideas and practices, supported action planning informed by these new ideas, and is now monitoring how these ideas and plans are being turned into action, results, and – ultimately – impact.
